THE REPRESENTATIVES FROM AFGAN WOMEN'S BUSINESS FEDERATION VISITED LATVIA

On August 1 – 6, 2008 a „Mentoring Master Workshop. West – East” organized by the association “Leader” was held in Latvia with the participation of five representatives from the Afghan Women’s Business Federation.
The aim of the Mentoring master workshop is to draw attention to the business environment in Latvia and Afghanistan, business opportunities in the Europe, the role of women in entrepreneurship, the woman as a leader, and mentoring in theory and in practice.
“Afghanistan has a special significance for modern Latvia. We are cooperating with people, who not only represent a country and the part of its society, which has been denied participation in important social and political process due to religious and social prejudices, but also a country, which is currently and will be for another few years in the center of attention for the international community. The Afghan women are not just one level below in the social hierarchy. They are two levels below, because they have to fight not only against social prejudices, but also they have to fight for their place in the modern political situation. There is a war in Afghanistan and will be for another few years, and if we can be of use in this process, we will gladly take this role,” admits Aiva Viksna, the Chairman of the Board from the association “Leader”.
There are two important motives for the “Mentoring Master Workshop. West – East” organized by the association “Leader”. First, the mentoring in last years has been highly appreciated amongst the business people as a movement promoting entrepreneurship in Latvia. There have been seven systematic and focused one year programs implemented in Latvia so far and there are more to come. Appreciating the remarkable interest from the business people, and women in particular, in the opportunities to acquire experience through the mentoring, as well as the wish to meet other venturous and professional women, to draw courage, support, and knowledge, the association Leader decided to organize a mentoring master workshop, in which the useful information for professional growth is combined with the informal exchange of contacts and experience. The other motive for the camp was the knowledge that the existing mentoring program in Latvia has also been highly appreciated internationally and should be implemented in other countries as well.
An intensive, two-day experience and professional knowledge exchange took place during the mentoring master workshop, which, besides the guests from Afghanistan, were attended by 15 business women and leaders from Latvia, several guest lecturers, and state officials. There were meetings with the State president Valdis Zatlers, the former President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia; the Memoranum of Understanding on Cooperation between "Lidere" and Afghan Women’s Business Federation was signed. The guests visited Turaida and district of Bauska during the visit. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, the Ministry of Defense, as well as the personal participation and contribution from the entrepreneur Valerijs Belokons.
