Baltic Mission: Sweden and Baltic States delegation in Riga PHOTO (1,6 Mb)
Delegation of 30 American leaders as well 16 women leaders from Sweden and 9 women leaders from Estonia will visit Riga in 14th May 2003. Delegation will be leaded by Washington State senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles.
This visit is organised by women organisation "LIDERE" in co-operation with the Centre for Women & Democracy at the University of Washington, Baltic Mission organisers, State Protocol of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, The President's Chancery of the Republic of Latvia. Baltic Mission Riga visit is supported by Hansabanka, magazines Kapitals and Bilance, and by Baltic News Service.
During the visit there will be meeting with the President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, with the Saeima speaker Ingrida Udre and with Latvian women leaders in politics, entrepreneurship, education and health care.
Baltic mission creates opportunities for women to explore global leadership, as well as open doors to business for women, by women and with women. It focuses upon an exchange of ideas and explores the obstacles women face professionally, politically, and personally in being leaders.
The results will business contacts between Latvia, USA, Sweden, Estonia, new business opportunities, breaking down of walls between women who excel in one area with women who excel in other areas (such as business leaders and non-profit association leaders) and the promotion of mentoring in Latvia.
Before the Baltic States access to the European Union it is more than important to strengthen women's role in the political and professional spheres of life. These issues are vital for the women's role in the society and must be a matter of a continuous discussion in order to ensure democracy in these countries.
The Baltic Mission is a project initiated by the Centre for Women & Democracy at the University of Washington. The Centre for Women & Democracy works to support, stimulate and foster women's effective participation and leadership in local, national and global affairs, promotes women's full representation, participation and leadership, while respecting the political, economic and social diversity in cultures world-wide.
The Baltic Mission will be bringing a delegation of 30 American women leaders and activists to Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in May of 2003. This delegation will be hosted in Stockholm by women elected officials and leaders from the highest-ranking nation in the world in terms of women's representation in government. From there, this international delegation will travel through the Baltic Countries meeting with women leaders and activists.
The first seminar will take place in Stockholm in May 9, 2003. It will be followed by seminars in Tallinn (May 12) and Vilnius (May 16). To the seminar in Vilnius women from Russia (St Petersburg, Kaliningrad), Ukraine, Byelorussia and Poland are invited. During these three seminars the following topics are going to be discussed:
